Early Life & Family Background
Late Michael Godsnear Young-Harry was born on July 31, 1944, to Elder Godsnear Young-Harry and Princess Dinah Godsnear Young-Harry in Buguma, Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. He was the first son among seven children—six sons and a daughter. Sadly, three of his brothers passed away, leaving four survivors.
His father, Elder Godsnear Young-Harry, was a prominent and highly respected gentleman, known for his intelligence, integrity, and decency. He was a distinguished member of the Amakiri family of Idoniboye-Obu group of houses. His noble traits were evidently passed down to his son, Michael.
His mother, Princess Dinah, hailed from the Chief Benibo (Egile) Amachree Royal Family House of Buguma, as well as the Adde War Canoe House, Suku Polo Ogura-ma (Old Bakana) in Degema Local Government Area. A woman of great beauty and warmth, she was known for the love and care she showered on all her children.

Education & Early Challenges
Michael Young-Harry began his education at Baptist School Buguma (1956-1962). He was driven by a strong desire to succeed, but his journey was interrupted by tragedy—the sudden passing of his father on January 23, 1966. This painful loss affected his education and thrust him into the harsh realities of life, as he became the family’s primary caretaker.
Determined to survive and build a future, he joined his uncle, Chief A.S. Young-Harry, in Port Harcourt, where he pursued vocational training at Kings College of Commerce (KCC). There, he majored in Bookkeeping and Secretarial Studies, equipping himself with skills for the professional world.
After successfully completing his studies with commendable grades, he secured employment through the recommendation of Justice Nabo Graham Douglas, joining John Holt Trading Company in Onitsha.
Surviving the Civil War & Career Growth
While working in Onitsha, the Nigerian Civil War erupted, forcing him to flee on a bicycle from Onitsha to Aba, before eventually returning home to his family. Despite attempts to force him into military conscription, he refused, staying true to his peaceful nature.
After the war, with Nigeria’s economy in disarray, he started a petty timber-supply trade, delivering firewood to homes and businesses across Port Harcourt. This showed his philosophy of resilience—never letting his hands be idle.
As the political and economic climate improved, he secured employment with ANANSA Shipping Ltd, where he served diligently before moving on to IDC (International Dredging Company). His work ethic and dedication made him highly sought after in the labor market.
Over time, he worked with multi-national companies, including Adrian Volka (Dutch Firm) and HAM DREDGING. Later, he joined a consortium of international firms contracted by the Nigerian government to build the new Finima settlement in Bonny Town.
After gaining vast experience in the maritime and engineering sectors, he established his own company, MIC Harry & Co., an Engineering and Construction Firm, which he managed until his passing. His excellence in job execution earned him respect, with clients trusting him wholeheartedly.
Personal & Family Life
In March 1969, Michael Young-Harry married Mrs. Ibim Michael Young-Harry, from Young-Amey Polo in Buguma, Asari-Toru Local Government Area. A beautiful and hardworking woman, she stood by him through thick and thin, ensuring that his family remained united.
Michael was a loving husband, an exceptional father, and a father figure to many—fondly called BIG DADDY. He had a total of thirteen children and extended his care and support to many beyond his immediate family. His home was open to both his nuclear and extended family, as well as friends in need.
Community & Leadership Influence
Michael was a true leader and peacemaker. People sought him out to resolve disputes and find solutions to problems. He was frequently consulted for guidance, leading many to suggest that he deserved a posthumous Justice of Peace award for his commitment to harmony and fairness.
Though selected to occupy the chieftaincy stool of his family, he was unable to complete the process before his passing. Nonetheless, his impact as a community figure remains unforgettable.
Christian Life & Final Days
Throughout his life, Michael Young-Harry was a devoted Christian and an active member of the Baptist Church in Buguma and Port Harcourt. His faith was deeply anchored in God, and he remained committed to his beliefs until his last breath.
As was his practice, he traveled home during the weekend preceding his death. He was hale and hearty when he returned on Sunday, July 18, 2010, but was unexpectedly taken by the cold hands of death on the morning of July 19, 2010.
Though his passing was shocking, his family remains grateful to God for the impactful life he lived.
